welcome to dyingarts

what we do & why: dyingarts is an online & physical art gallery and shop with an innovative concept,

‘art for life & end of life’

We showcase exciting contemporary fine art, craft and interior design pieces, in our ‘art for life’ collection. Juxtaposed with this, is our ‘art for end of life’ collection, which encompasses unique handmade cremation urns and funerary art. Many of the same artists and makers exhibit work in both areas.

We believe that art, craft and design can (and should) play a leading role in developing a sustainable future. So we offer our love for the handmade and offer a showcase of ethically produced, contemporary art, design and craft, that supports the environment and the artists too.

We also believe that funerary art deserves the same degree of focus and consideration as the art work which populates our daily lives. Cremation urns in our view, should be treated with the utmost consideration and artistic sensibility. We therefore feature the work of artists and craftspeople who understand the social significance of these ceremonial vessels and employ their skills and materials to create exquisite pieces that honour this solemn purpose.

We primarily operate online, providing a convenient platform to explore our curated selection. However, we also have our own artists' studios nestled within the vibrant creative community of Boscombe in Bournemouth on UK’s south coast. On occasion, we transform this space into a physical gallery space, where visitors are warmly welcomed. If you would like to experience our collection firsthand, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

our origins: dyingarts was established in 2021 by Simon Frend as a platform for his own art work and to bring together other creatives sharing his passion for the handmade and the environment. His evocative work can be found on the platform. He draws on many years experience of designing, making, educating, curating and exhibiting the work of artists and contemporary makers.

our (double) vision: to provide an engaging platform, showcasing art, craft & design that supports both the environment and makers, especially those engaged in endangered crafts, or dying arts. To champion authentically handcrafted ‘art for end of life’ as an alternative to the mass-produced and to promote funerary art as equally worthy of the critical attention.

our values: We take pride in representing artists, designers and makers who share our environmental concern and love of the handmade. We approach the curation process with utmost care, building supportive relationships with our artists and the wider creative communities. This allows us to know the provenance of every piece and ensure that they align with our values of sustainability and ethical production. We strive to minimise our environmental impact by using recycled, recyclable, and biodegradable packaging whenever possible and seek the greenest solutions in all of our decision making.

Every artwork we exhibit is not only aesthetically pleasing but also ethical and sustainable. Each piece is carefully handcrafted, ensuring that by purchasing a beautiful urn from our gallery shop, you are not only supporting the environment but also the talented makers behind these creations. We cherish the handmade for its inherent sustainability and the preservation of craft skills, including those in endangered artistic disciplines. The work we exhibit relies on the skill and individual creativity of each artist, resulting in unique and meaningful pieces. We understand that our approach may not appeal to everyone, but we hope that you share our appreciation for the craftsmanship and thoughtfulness that goes into each artwork.

At dyingarts, we value the intersection of artistic excellence, environmental consciousness, and ethical production. Join us in celebrating the fusion of artistry and commemoration, and discover art for life and end of life, that speaks to your heart while respecting the planet we call home.
